Duties:

Duties:

 

In addition to statutory duties and requirements included in sections 49.11, 49.153, 168.191, and 168.492 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Supervises a staff of 17 Assistant Prosecutors and 14 support staff in multiple locations. 
  • act as chief law enforcement official for the County.
  • review, authorize and prosecute violations of felony and misdemeanor criminal laws of the State of Michigan and County ordinances committed inside the County.
  • authorize and prosecute felony and misdemeanor juvenile delinquency offenses.
  • represent the County in criminal matters before the District and Circuit Courts; Juvenile delinquency, parental neglect and miscellaneous probate matters in Family Court, and appeals in the Court of Appeals and Michigan Supreme Court.
  • advise the Department of Human Services on child abuse and neglect petitions, and actions to terminate parental rights.
  • attend contested mental health commitment hearings.
  • presides at the monthly Concealed Weapon Permit Board, unless he or she opts off for the remainder of their term. In that case the county board appoints a certified firearms instructor to replace the Prosecuting Attorney.
  • file and prosecute actions to establish paternity.
  • file actions to establish family support orders.

 


Requirements:

Education: Law degree from an accredited law school.

Experience: Prefer some criminal and/or civil law experience and prior supervision of staff.

Other Requirements: Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan.

Position: Assistant Prosecuting Attorney

Duties:

Under general supervision of the County Prosecuting Attorney, prosecutes complaints for and on behalf of the County and other official agencies. Reviews and handles juvenile matters including delinquencies, truancies and status offences. Represents the People of the State of Michigan and Department of Social Services in paternity proceedings and child support collection matters; supervises interviews of mothers and fathers.

Processes extradition cases. Provides after hours, weekend and holiday assistance to police agencies regarding the review and authorization of felony arrests, legal questions, search warrants and exigent matters. Prepares and files petitions and represents the People of the State of Michigan in a variety of civil proceedings. Exercises considerable degree in independent judgment throughout each state of the criminal justice process. Completes special projects and assignments as requested by the Prosecuting Attorney.


Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
